For the Record. Part 1

Thoughts and Reflections.

Recording music in a studio is something most musicians will experience at some point in their career.

Whether you're in a band or a "hired gun" there are things that will help you have an edge when your playing is under the microscope.

Recently, I've been part of a lot of conversations about working in recording studios with a bunch of different people.

Discussing questions about reading/writing charts, playing to a click, playing the right part, handling the potential pressures of working with a producer, etc. was the focus of all of these talks with friends, students, and even strangers on the socials.

In the past six weeks or so, I have recorded drums and percussion on:

  • a jingle for a Google commercial
  • a record for a band I'm a member of
  • a record for a group I'm not in
  • a record for an artist I didn't know with a rhythm section he work with all the time
  • a record with a band I've never played with

This is an excellent time to reflect.
